Apple introduces the U2 iPod, U2 Digital Box Set

Apple today introduced the iPod U2 Special Edition as part of a partnership between Apple, U2 and Universal Music Group (UMG) to "create innovative new products together for the new digital music era." The new U2 iPod holds up to 5,000 songs and features a black enclosure with a red Click Wheel and custom engraving of U2 band member signatures. The new 20GB iPod U2 Special Edition is expected to be available mid-November for a suggested retail price of $350 from the Apple Store.

"We want our audience to have a more intimate online relationship with the band, and Apple can help us do that," said U2 lead singer Bono. "With iPod and iTunes, Apple has created a crossroads of art, commerce and technology which feels good for both musicians and fans."

The new U2 iPod is being introduced as the band prepares to release their new album "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" in late November. In addition to the new U2 iPod and the exclusive sale of the U2's single "Vertigo" at the iTunes Music Store, Apple has created the online music industry's first "Digital Box Set." The first digital box set, "The Complete U2," will contain over 400 tracks including all of the band's albums and over 25 rare and unreleased tracks. U2 fans will be able to purchase and download The Complete U2 with just one click on the iTunes Music Store in the US and Europe beginning in late November for $150.

U2 iPod customers will receive a coupon for $50 off the purchase of "The Complete U2".

"U2 and Apple have a special relationship where they can start to redefine the music business," said Jimmy Iovine, Chairman of UMG's Interscope Geffen A&M Records. "The iPod along with iTunes is the most complete thought that we've seen in music in a very long time."

Just recieved my iPod today! (Pepsi Canadian contest) So..umm..they were able to figure out the U.S exchange to Euro..one would think that it can't be that hard to figure out our little dollar!

Where's the Canadian Itunes Store Apple?!

Ofcourse this is probably some dumbass Canadian Gov. thing and is actually no fault of Apple's..

Anyway, not too much on the red/black, but the new color screens are sweet..just hope they don't look to "XPeeeee"!!! Can you upload your camera directly into the iPod Photo? (With attachment ofcourse!)

Good day all!

Somebody asked me to lend him some money so he could buy a new U2 iPod. I asked him how much he needed.

He said "I need about three-fitty."

Well then I looked at him more closely and IT WAS THE LOCH NESS MONSTER! I said "Damn you Loch Ness Monster get offa my lawn!"

Bad Day For Apple

$600 for an iPod?!?? That's WAY too much!!! What the hell is Apple thinking?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want a 60 GB iPod that just plays music for $500 -- is that too much to ask??

Jesus, Apple!

Honestly, Apple's moving in the wrong direction here. A flash-based player for $99 or $149 would have been a much better move for market domination.

This is ridiculous. People don't want to use their iPods for photos. Does ANYBODY want to use their iPods for photos? NOBODY in the world that I've ever talked to.

I'm not pleased at all. Not a bit.

A truly disappointing day. I don't think the iPod Photo is going to sell. I really don't. Smells like the Cube to me.

And give me a break on the U2 edition iPod... what a joke.

This is the day that Apple's arrogance started to get the best of them again.

An absolutely miserable day for Apple lovers.

Ooooookay then. Someone doesn't want the new iPod photo. Heard yah loud and clear. I remember back when Apple released the first iPod. If I had a quarter for every person who said "no one will pay $499 for an MP3 player" I'd be a rich person. Instead, I just bought AAPL stock, and while not rich, I've made a nice profit.

Sheesh, is anyone ever satisfied?
A pro photographer would love this device. If you don't eant photos then get the regular iPod, and quit bitching.

Even if Apple released what you really want I guarantee you'll complain.

Everything they do seems to be wrong? if so then they'd have gone under a while a go. they know exactly what they are doing and it's all calculated moves.

Shut up already

Yeah, they didn't drop the other iPods, they added stuff to the mix. If you don't want it, don't buy it. The other ones are still available.

Me? I paid $399 for the original iPod, another $219 for a 10GB iPod a few months ago, and probably will get the iPod Photo just for the color interface. I like it! Maybe it's just cause I wanna play solitaire in color.

Photos? I gotta agree, it's a neat little feature, but my Sony camera has a bigger screen than the iPod! The slideshow feature could be cool, especially if they can manage to pull off effects like iPhoto slideshows. But I think it's just as useful as maybe video on these little devices, ie not very.

Hey here's another thought: what about using an iPod for presentations?! Have each screen as a photo and let the user click back and forth between slides! There are already remote control interfaces for the iPod so it would work perfectly.

"I want a 60 GB iPod that just plays music for $500 -- is that too much to ask??"

Yes

If you have 60GB of music that you have to have with you all the time one or more of the following is true.

1) Your visits to home (and therefore a place to change up your music) are too infrequent. Sell your house/apartment and/or get a laptop (although >60GB drives are expensive in those things!).

2) You have too "in tune" with your music, and thus being without every last song all the time fills you with such terror you can't function.

3) You are so indecisive that out of your 80GB of music, you can't decide on just half of it that you feel reasonably sure you can find something to listen to until the next time you can load some other music.

4) You are a whinning little (wo)man who actually has no use for 60GB of music storage because none of the above is actually true.

Does that about cover it?
